Got a ticket coming home...
...wish the officer had known
what a day today has been...
And so kicks off the album that brought Amy centre stage. Was anybody else doing the same thing at the time, or were they all just trying to be cheery. It's interesting listening back through all her albums to find that depressive edge in lyrics. A white girl sings the blues. For me that was what made the connection. Of course you don't wish the dark threads in the tapestry on anyone, but they so often turn out to be our common ground.
I used to play a cassette of the album "Straight Ahead" over and over in rooms with the blinds drawn until I could face the world again. Does anyone even remember cassettes anymore? How the playback quality eventually started to degrade on you - a sure sign of a well loved album. Those were the days. -

I sure do remember cassettes and straight ahead, two concert albums, My fathers eyes and age to age finally got so bad I couldnt listen to them anymore. These sons helped me through hard days I really loved them

I remember cassette tapes, too -- still have boxes of them around here somewhere. As for white girls and the blues, I've found that over the years Amy's songs have spoken to wherever I've been in my life... and there can be something very comforting in the blues. "Raining on the inside..." (And I love Ashley Cleveland's music, too!)
